CONGRATULATIONS KMWSC on your 10th Anniversary and Book Launch

On the 10th Anniversary of the formal establishment of Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC), Sr Monica Suchiang IBVM, in her role as the director and secretary, requested Fr. Sacaria Joseph SJ of the Calcutta Province of the Jesuits to assist the Centre in creating a commemorative compendium for their Decennial Celebrations. At Monica’s request, Fr. Joseph generously wrote and designed the book entirely pro bono. The book is titled, “The Heart and the Hands”. The KMWSC community is deeply grateful to Fr. Joseph for his invaluable contribution.

Shruti Mitra shares a review of this wonderful book.

In The Heart and the Hands, Sacaria Joseph has created a novel literary genre, blending elements of a coffee table book with both fiction and non-fiction narratives. This innovative approach effectively portrays poignant tales of resilience and hope among society’s most vulnerable, underscored by the philanthropic efforts of Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC), dedicated to restoring dignity to those in need.

The captivating title, The Heart and the Hands, effectively encapsulates the essence and spirit of the book. It symbolizes KMWSC’s compassionate approach, where heartfelt initiatives are paired with practical actions to uplift individuals in society facing adversity.

From the outset, readers are drawn into the mission and vision inspired by Mary Ward, who defied societal norms to establish an institution advocating for marginalized women. Joseph skilfully weaves thirteen interconnected stories that delve deep into human suffering, highlighting how KMWSC’s interventions offer a beacon of hope. These stories celebrate triumphs, such as empowering brickfield laborers, restoring dignity to trafficked women, and fostering liberation among the LGBTQ community. Each story is titled meaningfully, reflecting themes of resilience and empowerment.

Accompanied by a poignant photo album, the narrative vividly illustrates these themes, capturing the emotional impact of each tale. Joseph’s writing illuminate’s themes of love, sacrifice, and the human spirit’s resilience in the face of adversity. Through compelling storytelling, he reminds us that even in darkness, human connections can bring healing and transformation.

The Heart and the Hands transcends fiction, bridging into reality with a call to action. Joseph challenges readers to embrace empathy and join hands in making the world a better place for all.
